# How MinCart Validates Limits and Handles Discounts

MinCart validates order limits by analyzing the contents of the cart. It checks whether the configured limits have been met and determines if a trigger should be implemented to restrict checkout.

#### How MinCart Validates Limits

When a customer adds items to their cart, MinCart evaluates the total quantity, value, or any other specified restriction against the set limits. This validation **process occurs at the cart level**, ensuring that the correct restrictions are applied before the customer proceeds to checkout.

**Strict limits** are also checked during checkout, by their rule running on Shopify's servers, whatever way the customer got there. At checkout, a strict limit compares each line's total after the discounts applied to it, such as an automatic discount. See [Strict Limits](https://molsoft.crisp.help/en/article/strict-limits-epceai/).

#### How MinCart Works with Discounts

MinCart counts each product's price after the discounts that apply to that product, and before discounts on the whole order. It works the same way in the cart and at checkout, for every limit, strict or not.

**Counted**, so they lower the price a limit checks:
* a sale price set on the product;
* an automatic discount on products ("Amount off products", "Buy X get Y");
* a discount code on products, whether the customer enters it in the cart or at checkout. A code entered at checkout stays on the cart, so the cart counts it too when the customer goes back to it.

**Not counted**, so the limit checks the price before them:
* discounts on the whole order ("Amount off order"), automatic or from a code;
* shipping discounts, such as free shipping. They only matter to the "Shipping cost after discount" activation rule.

For example, with a minimum order value of $100 and $110 of products in the cart:
* a 15% discount on products brings them to $93.50, so the minimum isn't met and MinCart blocks;
* a 15% discount on the order also brings the total to $93.50, but MinCart counts the products at $110, so the minimum is met and the order goes through.

**Tip**: if a minimum should apply after a store-wide discount, create it as a percentage off all products ("Amount off products") rather than off the order. MinCart then counts it.

#### Discounts from Other Apps

How a discount app's prices are counted depends on how the app applies them:
* **Apps that use Shopify's own discounts** (discount functions, which most discount apps use) follow the same rule: a discount on products is counted, a discount on the whole order isn't.
* **Apps that send the customer to checkout through a draft order** with adjusted prices, as some wholesale apps do: the cart never sees those prices, so a standard limit counts the original prices. A strict limit checks the adjusted prices at checkout. Make the limit strict if it has to count the app's prices.
